AYELET CARMI | OLAF KÜHNEMANN | SHAY KUN
29.07. – 03.09.11
Alexander Ochs Galleries | Berlin
opening: 28.07.11 | 7 pm, Friederike Schir introduces the exhibition.
After three years of working with old master Micha Ullman, who lives and works in Ramat Hasharon, Israel, the gallery is now showing the work of young Israelis for the first time. In the exhibition Update Your Reality, Alexander Ochs Galleries present the work of New York based artist Shay Kun, the Berlin artist Olaf Kuehnemann, who recently moved here from Tel Aviv, and Ayelet Carmi, who lives and works in Herzliya, Israel.
The artists’ engagement with various myths – both their celebration and their deconstruction can be seen as the metalevel of this exhibition. The works of each of these artists explore how myths develop from realities, and how realities develop from images that become fixed in our mind’s eye and thus change those realities.
While for Micha Ullman, now 71, the Shoah certainly forms the central point of reference, particularly with his German background, for Olaf Kuehnemann, who was born in Basel and grew up in Tel Aviv, it is the family as the center of social existence both in Israel and in the Diaspora. Shay Kun quotes the American painting of the Hudson River School from the nineteenth century and destroys the “intact visual words” they depict by inserting contemporary intrusions. Ayelet Carmi reflects on female roles in ancient mythology and interrogates them in terms of their continuing impact today.
