Thomas Baldischwyler was born in Lage, Germany in 1974. He studied at Hochschule für bildende Künste, Hamburg, until 2006. He was awarded with several prizes and stipends, among them a residency stipend from Philipp-Otto-Runge-Stiftung and the Förderpreis from Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster. His work is exhibited in Hamburg frequently and he had shows in Münster, Berlin and Sidney. In Hamburg, where he lives and works as an artist and as an musician, he also runs his own music label.
Baldischwyler works in different media. The way he works changes in accordance with the topic and context of the work. He produces videos, music, and works with collages, painting behind glass, installation and photography. In his visual and also auditive production he simplifies cultural-historical signs and techniques to learn about the groundworks of our written history. His historical investigations spread from the death of Caravaggio in Porto Ercole and the argument between Hermann S. Reimarus, a friend of Lessing, and René Descartes, which Baldischwyler himself made up for an exhibition, to the study of the protestant Theologist Friedrich Schleiermacher. They are a landmarks for the comparison to a different production and reception of culture.
