Dagmar Rauwald was born in Essen, Germany, in 1965. From 1986 to 1993 she studied at Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Hamburg under Sigmar Polke. Besides residency stipends in Slowenia and Croatia she won the Theaterpreis der Bayrischen Theatertage in 2004. Rauwalds work was shown in solo exhibitions at the Goethe-Institut in Bologna (1996), in Toulouse (2005), Dusseldorf and Hamburg and is presented on in group exhibitions and on art fairs like Art Cologne or Art Karlsruhe on a regular basis.
Rauwalds Paintings posses a high amount of emotional expression. Color is applied to the foil in quick brushstrokes, and cumulates there to sculptural knots. A gestural way of painting that reminds us of the Action Painting or the Informel of the 50s and that is as well turned towards the inside to examine and make visible own feelings and mental states. But different from the paintings of the Informel that neglected the real world outside, Rauwald keeps the connection to the corporal and objective world and forms figures and faces time and again.
